Teachers understand the social, ethical, legal, and human issues surrounding the use of technology
in PK-12 schools and apply those principles in practice. Teachers:
- model and teach legal and ethical
practice related to technology use.
- apply technology resources to enable
and empower learners with diverse backgrounds, characteristics, and abilities.
- identify and use technology resources
that affirm diversity
- promote safe and healthy use of technology
resources.
- facilitate equitable access to technology
resources for all students.
Fair Use and Copyright Issues
From
the article, we learned many things including the value of respect and responsibility. Basically, for educational purposes
we are given leeway in using any copyrighted materials. However, we have to know our limitations as well. We have
to show respect for the works of others and ensure that we do not abuse the freedom they give us for using their copyrighted
materials. We also have to remember to only use copyright works strictly for educational purposes. Commercial use,
for example, is forbidden. Copyright right materials are not to be used to promote, sell, and persuade the public in
any way besides educational use. This makes it very fair for its author to maintain its ownership. Along
with this, there are many other guidelines and limitations that we have to abide with. Since most of the resources that
students use are not given credit, another viable aspect that was mentioned was the requirement of a notification message.
Almost everything, from clip-art to lesson activities, is used widely for educational purposes. Most of this, whether
wholly advantageous, does not give credit at all. A notification on an opening page will change that.
It's stated that a notification message must be included in an educational multi-media project. We think that requirement
is very beneficial. Whether it is on an opening or closing page, a notification message or a citation gives all works
the acknowledgement they deserve. Although these 2 aspects do not seem quite important to others, we find it very valuable.
Because many guidelines are usually ignored, we found the two to be very useful and viable because it is quite common to misuse
copyright information for commercial use and because most students tend to forget to cite their sources.
As
future teachers, we have to guide our students in the proper usage of copyrighted multimedia materials especially those who
are new in using such materials. The way which we would do this is to continually provide articles and materials to
explain about Fair Use and Copyright Materials or we could briefly explain its importance. This not only teaches respect
and responsibility, but also teaches the value of an original piece of work from someone else. With that, students and
teachers can use the concept of perspective taking and not take for granted the hard work individuals put into their
creations. In other words, students would gain a better understanding on the outcome of what happens if someone
else misused "their" product. Enforcing this, however, can be done with strict guidelines and follow-ups by the teacher. Hopefully,
with enough explanations, students will use copyright material strictly for educational purposes as mentioned in the article.
