ASSURE LESSON PLAN

A Physical Education class of Fifth graders ages 11 to 12 years.    The class is made up of 15 students from different socioeconomic statuses.  There are 8 boys and 7 girls.  Most of the students are tactile and visual learners.

Students will be able to tabulate the number of votes for each sport based on the information given by each student on the board.

  • Students will be able to construct a spreadsheet for the data gathered using Microsoft excel in the computer with 85 percent accuracy.
  • Students will be able to graph the data from the spreadsheet using Microsoft excel in the computer.
  • Students will be able to interpret the spreadsheet and graph with 85 percent accuracy.

Students will be helped by their teachers in conducting the activity through modeling and explaining.  The teacher will guide the students in every step of the activity from the beginning to the end.  For this activity, the class needs pencil, papers and computers.  The teacher will ask students to think of their favorite sports and ask a volunteer to write each sport given by the class on the board.  The students will vote which sports are the top 5 favorites of the class, and they will tally the votes.  Once the students have their data completed, the teacher will bring the students to the computer laboratory to work on their spreadsheet and graph with the use of the program Microsoft Excel.

U - Preview Materials:

The teacher will ensure that all students have their papers, pencils and have the computer laboratory ready for students to use.  The teacher will ask the students about their knowledge in using computers since the activity requires the use of computer to complete the tasks.

Prepare the Materials:

The teacher will also check if students know how to tally votes accurately. In case students are not knowledgeable enough to perform the assignment, the teacher will have to guide the students in the process of doing the activity.  Through coaching, the teacher will guide the students in every steps of the activity starting from listing the class favorite sports on the board up to casting their votes, counting the votes, creating the table and graphing the data.

Prepare the Environment:

The teacher needs to identify students who have basic knowledge about computers and partner them with another student that is not good in using the media.  Through cooperative learning, students will be able to help each other by sharing ideas and information.

Prepare the Learners:

The teacher have to explain the objectives of doing the activity, so students are aware of what are expected from them in accomplishing the activity given.

Provide the Learning Experience:

The teacher will let the students share in class their experience in doing the activity by doing a class presentation.   Students will explain the spreadsheet and graph created on their presentation.

R - Procedures:

  1. The teacher will ask the students to think of their favorite sports.  The teacher will ask a volunteer to list each sport given by the class on the board.  The teacher will ask students to put an “X” mark on each of their favorite sports after they put their names on the left side of the board.  Once all students have come up to the board and voted on their favorite sports, the teacher will ask volunteers to count the number of votes under each sport and write the total at the bottom.
  2. The teacher will explain to the class that the data on the board will be use to do the spreadsheet, so they have to take their papers and pencils and write down the data.  They need the data when they go to the computer laboratory.
  3. The teacher will now assign partners for each student to discuss the use of computer in completing the activity.  They will transfer to the computer laboratory to complete the activity.
  4. Through the use of a projector, the teacher will demonstrate how to operate the computer.  She will start by turning it on first.  Once the students have the computers ready, the teacher will direct them to open the Microsoft Excel by clicking the start button and go to programs and move to Microsoft office and select the Microsoft Excel.
  5. The students will be directed to start on their table by putting the corresponding data to each column and rows.  The teacher will do it also on the computer, so students can be guided through the projector.
  6. Once done with the spreadsheet, the teacher will instruct the student to highlight the information on the spreadsheet and click on the icon on the top that says, “Chart wizard”.
  7. Once done with the graph, the student will print a copy of it to show to the class and the students will explain their findings by interpreting the graph through a class presentation.

E - The teacher will check the data gathered by each student.  The teacher will check if the students calculated the votes correctly.  The teacher will check if the students know how to create a table for the information gathered.  The teacher needs to verify if the students did the graphs correctly by checking their final work.  The teacher can give another take home assignments for students to work on with the use of Microsoft excel.
