A Noble Dream

       Since I was a child, it was my dream to become an accountant and to eventually have my own accounting firm. However, when my nephew, Clint was born, my perspective in life and even my goals changed.Clint is a down-syndrome child, and it was quite difficult for our family to raise him. It was our first experience to have some one with special needs in the family.  He was one of the reasons why I wanted to become a special education teacher.  However, as I pursue my degree in education, I come to realize that having a Down syndrome nephew is not only the reason why I am pursuing this career right now. Clint only opened the door for me to know what I really want to be in life.   Yes, being a teacher is what I want because of the long summer vacation, the opportunity of working with young people, and the chance to help improve the value of education in our society.

The long summer vacation of the teachers attracted me to choose this profession.  I was born in a huge family, and my parents have little time for each one of us.  When I was young, I told myself that I would choose a career that will give me a long time off from work. In this way, I can have quality time with my husband and children.  If I have a responsibility to the society to educate children as a teacher, I also do have my responsibility for my family.  Besides nine months of teaching could really drain me out, so I need that long vacation to recharge in order to have the full energy needed to be able to teach effectively.  

Another reason why I am pursuing my degree in education is because of the opportunity of being able to work with young people.    As I mentioned earlier, I belong to a big family, and I have dozens of nieces and nephews.  It is quite interesting to listen to them whenever we have family gatherings.  Definitely, you will be amazed with the way they talk and behave.  It would be nice to be part of the lives of these young people.  It would be worthwhile to help these young individuals achieve their goals in life, and once you help them through, you will acquire a great amount of respect and recognition from them. 

One of the main reasons why I want to be a teacher is to have that chance to help improve the value of education in our society.  I would like to contribute new ideas and approaches that may be helpful to make learning more effective.  As a mother, I would like my don to have the best education there is, even if he would go to a private or public school.  It would be easy for me to know if my child is receiving the right education he deserves if I am part of the system than just being a spectator.  If as a mother and a teacher to be, I would like my child to have a good education then as a teacher I should set an example by becoming an effective teacher to other children.  In this way, we can prepare these young people to be ready for the future.

 Well, these are the reasons why I am going to school to have a degree in education.  The long summer vacation, the opportunity of working with young people, and the chance to help improve the value of education in our society are just some of the many reasons why there are many people who want to be teachers.  Whatever their reasons may be are not important. What matters most is that, there are still individuals who are interested to be teachers. Teachers play an important role in our society.  I just hope that the government and our society will compensate them properly and give them the recognition they deserve.  Without our beloved teachers, we will not have engineers, doctors, nurses, governors, and even presidents.
